A chance meeting!

Vievinum is an iconic wine event with producers from all over the world - though the amount of winemakers from Austria is by far the majority - here it's possible to taste what local grapes that you mainly find in Austria like: Rotgipfler, Grüner Veltliner, Zierfandler, Frühroter Veltliner etc. all the local specialties but it's also an option to try and focus on the international varieties.

When I tried the wines in 2024 from Weinwurm it was the last day of Vievinum, in the last hour of the wine fair, for 3 days straight I had been looking for Chardonnay since we have been lacking it in our portfolio, what i found tasting with Georg was both a Chardonnay that I really enjoyed and the local speciality of "Gemichster Satz" - the wines really stood out as something special with depth, quality and intensity. Since tasting wines in a rush, I asked for his contacts and if it was possible to send some samples to re-taste the wines back home in Denmark. We got everything together and some time after, in Denmark Nina and I tried the wines again and could agree on working with the "Homage Chardonnay Reserve" and "Gemischter Satz Schmatz".

A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

At Weingut Weinwurm, Georg Weinwurm strives to create wines that reflect the vibrant character of the Weinviertel region. From vineyard to bottle, every step of our process is guided by respect for nature, a commitment to quality, and a passion for winemaking that has been passed down through generations.

In the vineyard

  • Sustainable Practices: “We are proud to have held the Sustainable Austria certification for three years. This certification reflects not only our dedication to environmentally friendly viticulture but also our commitment to social responsibility and economic sustainability. We use no herbicides or pesticides, prioritizing the health of our ecosystem and the purity of our wines.” - Georg Weinwurm
  • Soil Health: Native grasses grow between the vineyard rows, promoting biodiversity and preventing erosion while naturally enriching the soil.
  • Precision Care: Every vine receives individual attention—de-budding, de-shooting, and leaf-thinning are all done by hand to ensure that each grape bunch develops perfectly.
  • Selective Harvesting: "We carefully thin bunches to remove unevenly ripened or under-ripe grapes, ensuring only the best fruit remains. Harvesting is done entirely by hand to preserve the integrity of the grapes." - Georg Weinwurm
  • Focus on Quality: By limiting yields, the vines concentrate their energy on fewer grapes, resulting in wines with exceptional character, complexity, and depth.

In the cellar:

  • Natural and Traditional Fermentation: “Depending on the wine and its character, we use either natural or traditional fermentation methods to bring out the best in the natural product.” - Georg Weinwurm
  • Steel and Barrel Aging: The wines age in a combination of stainless steel and carefully selected oak barrels to maintain the perfect balance between freshness and structure.
  • Hands-On Care: The wine is gently stirred on its lees, a process that enhances texture and complexity while naturally protecting the wine.
  • Less is More: “Our philosophy is to preserve the natural essence of our wines by minimizing intervention. We add only the bare minimum of sulfites to ensure stability while maintaining authentic flavors.” - Georg Weinwurm
  • Time as a Key Ingredient: “For us, patience is everything. Our wines are given the time they need to mature naturally, developing balance, stability, and harmony before reaching your glass.” - Georg Weinwurm
